What would be a good self defense gun for a woman?
I live alone and want to get a gun for protection. I want something small that's easy to control but does the job.
I would not tell a woman to get a .380 just because she's a woman and unused to guns. You want a gun that will stop an assailant, not just wound him.
Smaller guns are actually more difficult to control, and much more difficult to fire in times of great stress. If you want to get a .380 ACP for concealed carry, go ahead and do it, but since being small and inconspicuous is not necessary for a home Defense Weapon; get a gun that will do the job.
.45 ACP, .40 S&W, 9mm. Nothing smaller, please. A full size handgun that can mount a tac-lite and has good visibility sights. Tritium may not really be necessary but you may find the glowing night sights easier to use.
First, go to a defensive handgun class for women. Don't get talked into going to a free lesson at a gun shop/ range, and don't believe that a day spent with your cousin who carries will do it either. Find a professional school and pay for it: it may be the best money you ever spend.
Then, and only then, and only after having held and shot some of the pistols yourself should you decide what to buy.
If you still want a recommendation:
1st choice: Glock or XD; given that you may have trouble finding a comfortable grip on some of them.
2nd choice: ANY 1911 (you can get them in 9mm if you can't get used to the .45s).
Whatever you do, do not believe the lie that because you are a woman you need to have a diminutive, underpowered gun with a long double action trigger pull and sights that are unseeable in the dark.
Although they can be intimidating at first, the .45 ACP is a proven manstopper, and if my 105 lb little sister can handle hers just fine (and better than most men), then you can too: Just practice, get comfortable with your weapon and overcome your fear of it.
