The Special Air Service

General Information

The Special Air Service or SAS is perhaps one of the best recognized Special Forces Unit in United Kingdom which is tasked with operations like direct action, investigation and counter terrorism. Since its establishment in the year 1941 at Kabrti, SAS has continuously captured the thoughts of public and the military alike by the unconventional and daring personality of its operations. The personality of the methods and the tasks strange to the Special Air Service has made it hard to regulate items of gears. Besides these common issues the SAS personals also require and usually access to some of the specialized kits often newly created to meet particular requirements of the British Army.

SAS Organization

The British Army's SAS consists of two reserves Regiment, one regular Regiment, 22 SAS, 23 SAS and 21 SAS. The 22 SAS is normally divided into four Squadrons namely B, G, D and A, with almost 60 men in each squadron. One single squadron consists of four troops where-in each troop is specialized in several methods of insertion. This may include boat troops or amphibious, mountain troops or arctic warfare and high altitude, freefall troops or air and mobility troops or vehicles. Every single squadron also rotates through various roles which may include six months of stint on some exceptional projects or on a carry-out counter terrorist mission.

SAS Roles

All the regiments have wide range of tasks where-in they require disciplines and special training they include: -

* CT or Counter Terrorism - One sabre squadron has some special tasks when it comes to counter terrorism duties this includes rotation of four squadrons through their roles on six monthly basis. These squadrons have to go through anti-terrorist actions against all the kinds of imaginable targets. They also have to rescue several hostages from trains, buses, planes, buildings, ships and even coaches.

* Forward Air Control - By stressing on air force in the present warfare the requirement of skilled forward air controllers on the ground known as air strikes is very much important. In this team of SAS there is at least one troop specially trained to guide and communicate with people associated with aircraft attacks or strikes.

* Intelligence Gathering - Stealing intelligence about the movements and strengths of the enemy is actually not just glamorous but also useful information required for special operations. For this SAS troops are specially trained to perform actions against the enemy however these techniques are used successfully and are popularly known as hard routine work.

* Target attacks - The SAS troops started its operations during the World War II and carried out sabotage missions. However, the modern-day SAS team keeps this tradition as the experts infiltrate deep into enemy's territory and destroy communication lines, railways lines, bridges, roadways and fuel pumps.

* Training Alien Military Officials - For several years, SAS has shared its expertise with several other nations like providing military training facilities from their own Bodyguards and Special Forces. Besides that British Government also gets financial and political benefits from these arrangements because it is a part of the regiment's reputation.
